COMESA presents vast opportunities for Zimbabwean products, given its huge import bill, which stood at $165 billion in 2015. Opportunities for increasing intra-COMESA trade can be identified in sectors such as construction, the entire agriculture value chain and food processing industries.
Zimbabwe has the capacity and potential to produce products such as chemical fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, agro chemicals, fish, dried vegetables, cement, footwear and packaging, which constituted 8 percent of COMESA’s import bill in 2015 Zimbabwe’s total exports to the world stood at $2,7 billion in 2015, which is 1,6 percent of COMESA’s total imports. If Zimbabwe aims to capture as little as 3 percent of COMESA’s import bill, this will boost the country’s total exports to $5 billion.
